It was inaugurated in 1976. Its futuristic taper somewhat surprising. It has a capacity to accommodate 5,000 people seated or 20,000 feet. It measures 106 meters in diameter at the base and 96 feet high. Inside, a large cross remains suspended on long distance high higher ceiling. Curved walls have four large windows that symbolize the four virtues of the church. Its main gate is decorated by 48 reliefs in bronze. In the crypt is a sacred art museum that can be visited on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 12pm.

With 106 meters high and 96 meters in diameter, this huge concrete cone, was erected by architect Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca between 1964 and 1976. The front door of the cathedral (18 m high), is ornamented with bronze bas-reliefs, and large open interior space, free of any support structure. It has a capacity of 20,000. In each cardinal point there are huge windows that go from floor to ceiling representing the four attributes of the church. In the basement there is a small museum of sacred art and catacombs.
