Teatro Real

Located in front of the Royal Palace, the Teatro Real (Royal Theatre) is one of the most significant monuments of Madrid and it’s considered one of the most important theaters of Spain and Europe. It was built on the former Teatro de los Caños del Peral (Caños del Peral Theatre) during the reign of Ferdinand VII, when he ordered the renovation of the old Plaza de Oriente. The architect in charge of the project, Antonio López Aguado, designed an irregular hexagonal shape building with the main entrance facing the Plaza de Oriente and a smaller entrance located in the now Plaza de Isabel II. After the former architect’s death, the project ended up in the hands of the Spanish neoclassical architect, Theodore Custodio Moreno. Painters Rafael Tejeo, Eugenio Lucas and artist Philastre Humanité-René, were responsible for the interior decoration of the theater. The theater was inaugurated on 19 November 1850 representing as work release the opera La Favorita by Gaetano Donizetti.
